Job Description:

  • Affix identifying information onto a variety of materials and products, using engraving machines or equipment.

Duties and Tasks:

  • 1) Observes action of cutting tool through microscope, and adjusts movement of stylus to ensure accurate reproduction.
  • 2) Sharpens cutting tools on cutter grinder.
  • 3) Examines engraving for quality of cut, burrs, rough spots, and irregular or incomplete engraving.
  • 4) Verifies conformance to specifications, using micrometers and calipers.
  • 5) Brushes acid over designated engraving to darken or highlight inscription.
  • 6) Inserts cutting tool or bit into machine and secures with wrench.
  • 7) Positions and secures work piece, such as nameplate, stamp, seal, badge, trophy, or bowling ball, in holding fixture, using measuring instruments.
  • 8) Adjusts depth and size of cut by adjusting height of worktable or adjusting gauge on machine arms.
  • 9) Sets stylus at beginning of pattern.
  • 10) Selects and inserts letter or design template beneath stylus attached to machine cutting tool or router, according to work order.
  • 11) Starts machine and guides stylus over template, causing cutting tool to simultaneously duplicate design or letters on workpiece.

  • 4) Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material — Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • 5) Getting Information — Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.

Abilities:

  • 1) Arm-Hand Steadiness — The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
  • 2) Control Precision — The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • 3) Near Vision — The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • 4) Manual Dexterity — The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • 5) Visualization — The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.

Knowledge

  • Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
