Job Definition:

  • Pre-press technicians proof, format, set and compose text and graphics into a form suitable for use in various printing processes and representation in other visual media.

Job Description:

  • Set up and arrange type by hand. Assemble and lock setup of type, cuts, and headings. Pull proofs.

Duties and Tasks:

  • 1) Inserts spacers between words or units to balance and justify lines.
  • 2) Arranges galleys of linotype slugs (takes) in sequence on correction table.
  • 3) Transfers type from stick to galley when setup is complete.
  • 4) Cleans type after use and distributes it to specified boxes in type case.
  • 5) Removes incorrect portion and manually inserts corrections.
  • 6) Compares symbols on proof with galley symbol, and reads portion of text to locate positions for insertion of corrected slugs.
  • 7) Compares corrected type slugs against proof to detect errors.
  • 8) Measures copy with line gauge to determine length of line.
  • 9) Prepares proof copy of setup, using proof press.
  • 10) Inserts lead, slugs, or lines of quads between lines to adjust length of setup.
  • 11) Arranges, groups, and locks galley setups of type, cuts, and headings in chases, according to dummy makeup sheet.

  • 3) Getting Information — Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.

Abilities:

  • 1) Finger Dexterity — The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
  • 2) Near Vision — The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • 3) Wrist-Finger Speed — The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.

Knowledge

  • 1) Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • 2) Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
